Deserted Dominican Retreat Project – Elkins Park, PA

Every morning for a week I went out to the abandoned nunnery and stamped about 300 fallen petals with the face of Jesus and dispersed them back on the ground. The image is produced by bruising the petal with a carved plaster relief stamp, not with ink. As the petals brown, the image disappears, until the only thing left is the memory of the image by those who encountered it – who may have been locals taking a stroll through the grounds, developers looking at the property, or student from the close by school.

This Project was a comment on the ephemeral nature of life, and how we are always seeking a purpose and meaning during our time here. Some search in an organized manner with specific images and a book, and others need a less structured manner and a little time outside to witness the miracles of nature and the cycles of energy transformations.
